A beautiful poem for the planet

field of rapeseed
Here’s to the sun that will light up the day
Here’s to the joy that will replace the grey
Here’s to the trees that will dance without care
Here’s to the forests that will always be there
Here’s to the fox that recovers from fear
Here’s to the species to never disappear
Here’s to our race, it is human and kind
Here’s to the awakening of all that are blind
Here’s to the self that we all must embrace
Here’s to the healing that will then take place
Here’s to us feeling the pain of the world
Here’s to the joy that will then be unfurled
Here’s to the role that we all can play
Here’s to us bringing forth a better day
Here’s to the new year, hopeful and free
Here is to us, to you and to me.
Happy New Year.

Indoor recycling location required

TerraCycle TigerSussex Green Living have linked up with a company called TerraCycle to recycle previously unrecyclable packaging and products.  TerraCycle have signed up manufacturers who want their products waste resources to be diverted from our landfills and incinerators.  Both of these disposal options produce added carbon and other greenhouse gases, these waste materials will now either be upcycled or recycled into new products, which reduces the need for new materials to be extracted from our planet. More information about the recycling schemes we have set up can be found here.

Why we must recycle as much plastic as possible

plastic bottle recycling Recycle it! Milk bottle tops

For simplicity lets just look at the plastic bottle.  They are used to package a wide variety of things, from juice to soft drinks, and they play a ubiquitous role in the lives of many consumers, along with other plastic products. With a growing awareness of the environmental issues which surround plastics, many people have become interested in the life cycles of plastic products, from manufacturing to eventual disposition in a landfill or recycling facility. Being aware of the process behind the production of plastics can encourage consumers to think more carefully about how they use and dispose of such plastics. Because plastic bottles are a very visible form of plastic use, plastic bottles make an easy target for activism and education.

The life cycle of a plastic bottle starts, obviously, with the creation of the plastic used to make it. The vast majority of plastic bottles are manufactured from petroleum, which comes from deposits which can be up to three billion years old. Plastics which get sent to landfill are estimated to take between 300 and 1000 years to biodegrade (if they ever do).

Pedro says “Recycle everything, there is no such thing as rubbish it is just waste resources in the wrong place”.

Learn about the recycling schemes where we take materials which the council can not recycle, then recycle them for the financial benefit of Sussex Wildlife Trust, William Penn Primary School in Coolham and WAKOOS nursery for children in Billingshurst.

Learn more about the lifecycle of plastic in this excellent article.

Poem – Spell of Creation

Beautiful Poppy fields
Within the flower there lies a seed,
In the seed there springs a tree,
In the tree there spreads a wood.
In the wood there burns a fire,

Apples galore!

If you’re lucky enough to have your own apple tree(s) don’t let theMaking use of Apples fruit fall and rot on the ground.  Pick carefully, store in a frost free place or be creative and get cooking. When Mother Nature supplies such abundance for the birds and we humans, let us enjoy and make the most of such a harvest. Read more

Summer Activities

The summer holidays have arrived and it looks like we may have some rainy days between now and the children going back to school. With all that time to fill, why not try some of our Rainy Day Play or get the children making some Green or Eco Art?

Whether it is building robots or castles with boxes, rockets or 10 tin bowling with steel cans, Olympic torches with cardboard tubes, yoghurt pots and foil, elephants with bottles, tubs and foil or perhaps a bottle top flower for the garden.  They are all fun and creative activities which cost nothing, entertain the children and most importantly teach us to use rubbish as a waste resource.

Renewable energy from abandoned viaduct!

An abandoned viaduct is to be transformed into a Wind Turbine

Viaduct converted into wind turbine bridgeA bridge that repurposes abandoned viaducts, produces energy AND looks futuristically sleek? Yes, it can be true, and it is Italy’s proposed Wind Turbine Viaduct called “Solar Wind.” Southern Italy is dotted with unused viaducts, and rather than spending $50 million to tear them down, town officials near Calabria held a competition called “Solar Park South,” open to designers and engineers asking them to come up with an environmentally conscious way to re-use the existing structures.
