Inconvenient Truth changes lives

Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth coming to Horsham. On Tuesday 25th October 8pm Transition Horsham are showing the film at their monthly meeting at the Friends Meeting House, Worthing Road, RH12 1SL (opposite Sainsburys). Come and let this film change your life!

Premiered 10 years ago at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival the documentary An Inconvenient Truth took the world by storm.  The film creatively shares former United States Vice President Al Gore‘s campaign to educate citizens about global warming.  The documentary was a critical and box-office success, winning two Academy Awards for Best Documentary Feature and Best Original Song.

This film brings the issue of climate change out into the open and into mainstream culture like never before. It has made people ask tough questions about our climate and want to know what they could do to make our planet a safer, healthier place for us all.

After launching the film Al Gore set up the Climate Reality Leadership Corp, Al Gore and his team have trained more than 10,000 Climate Reality Leaders around the world, conveying the message of Al Gore and his powerful film.

I trained with Al Gore in Manila, Philippines in March 2016 and now share his message through talks to adults and young people and age appropriate workshops with children.

This is ‘my story’ as to how this incredible film affected me.

In 2011 my son was only three years old and with motherhood came a greater awareness and concern about the future of life on our Planet Earth. I started to get rather depressed about the prospects for my son and future generations. It was at that point that I really started my search for solutions. There were a number of ‘lightbulb moments’ around that time, watching ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ being one of them. It had such an impact on me that I was spurred on into positive action; I thought to myself ‘you have the marketing and communication skills Carrie, just get on and do something, anything’. I wanted to feel that when I reached the end of my life I could say to my son, I did everything within my power to make a positive difference for you. So on Earth Day 2012 I launched www.Sussexgreenliving.co.uk; it was my night job whilst running a business by day plus all my family commitments.

The film totally changed my life. In 2014 I decided to sell my shares in the family business IThe Age of Stupid had been running for 17 years, so I could follow my ‘green’ passion or some would call it an obsession. I continued to read, watch films, learn and share the knowledge I gained; two other films also had a big impact on me, ‘Age of the Stupid’ and ‘Blood of the Amazon’, both life-changing films. Details of these films and others can be seen here.

In the spring of 2016 I met a Climate Reality Leader who had recently trained in Miami. As soon as she told me about the Climate Reality Leadership Corp and the next programme would be in Manila in the Philippines, I knew I had to go. Not only did I want to learn from the incredible Al Gore and his panel of experts but Manila is where an amazing UK charity, which I have supported since 2012, have their beneficiaries living. After the Climate Reality Leadership programme I led 11 other new Climate Reality Leaders to visit the Philippine Community Fund; we toured their school made out of upcycled shipping containers, saw workshops where they make stunning goods out of waste resources and spent an hour walking around the dumpsite where they lived. The visit to Manila was a totally life changing experience; our experience can be read here.

Since my training in Manila in March 2016, I have given a number of Climate Reality Talks to adults, lots of ‘Love Earth & our Atmosphere’ sessions to children and I have even changed my hybrid for an EV car! I now also have lots of other climate related events and talks planned. I really feel part of a powerful movement which can and will make a positive difference for future generations and all who live on our great planet. Thank you so much to Al Gore and his team for everything! When I give my Climate Reality talks, part of my story is how ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ was one of the ‘lightbulb moments’ that changed my life. I feel truly honoured to be part of the Corp!
