Starting May 19th:

Sussex Green Ideas online on the 3rd Wednesday  of every month 7-8 p.m.

We know that groups aiming to reduce our impact on the climate and natural world are busy.

However, we hope that you would find it useful, occasionally, to share news, ideas and appeals for help – with people from other groups and with people looking to become practically more involved.

Sussex Green Ideas builds on the work of both the on-line Climate Cafe and Horsham Future Forum, which it replaces. It will continue to wrestle with potential ways to reduce our impact on the climate and the natural world. Going on-line during the pandemic helped the community of activists across Sussex (and particularly Horsham District) to keep in touch and learn from each other. We want to keep this, even as we restart local face to face activities.

We will meet monthly via Zoom, on the third Wednesday, at 7pm starting on May 19th. We will have a speaker from a local organisation every other month. In between, we will have a networking meeting to discuss the progress of various Sussex initiatives, focusing on Horsham District and what we can each learn from them.

The meetings should be interesting and useful to both current and future activists!

People who have previously attended the Horsham Future Forum can use the same Zoom details used for that monthly event. New attendees need to book via Eventbrite, then going forward can use the same monthly Zoom meeting details.

Here’s the schedule so far:

  • May 19th – introductions to all the organisations that want to be involved and hearing a brief update on their current activities.
  • June 16th -In June, Sussex Green Ideas will focus on preparing to stop heating our homes with gas.We can learn from what Sussex groups are doing – and consider what individuals and groups can do locally.Because of high carbon emissions associated with gas, new homes will not be connected to gas from 2025 onwards. Existing homes also need to change from gas – probably by 2030. The alternatives are more expensive so we need to use less. We need to make our homes more energy efficient – particularly through insulation. Pauline, from Transition Town Worthing, will explain how their “Eco-Homes trail” helps people decide what to do, by seeing what their neighbours have done and hearing what they think of it. We’ll also look at some on-line support. And how to pay for it? The short-lived government Green Homes Grant has gone – but there is some new funding, particularly for those living in the least energy efficient homes and on low incomes (including tenants). We’ll provide an update – and discuss how local groups could help publicise what’s available for Horsham District.

There will also be an opportunity for updates from local groups.

Here is the post about the presentations at that meeting.

  • July 21st – will include feedback from a couple of Author Evenings organised by Steyning Green Books – We’ll discuss what we can learn from the recently published books by Chris Goodall “What We Need To Do Now – for a Net Zero Future” and Rob Hopkins “From What Is to What If”.
  • There will be no August session, but we will evaluate – and, depending on the evaluation, share plans for September and after.
